Peacefully passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025 with his family by his side, at the age of 81. John was the devoted husband of Elspeth (née Jones), and a loving father to Matthew (Louise), Judith Hamilton, and Erin Shea (Matt). He was a proud and cherished grandfather to Chris, Andrew, Caitlin, Liam, Dylan, Luke, Declan, and Quinn. John is also survived by his brother, Stephen (Manchester, England).
Born in Manchester in 1943, John emigrated to Canada in the 1970s, settling in Burlington where he continued his career as a design draftsman and created a wonderful life for his young family.
John was an avid do‑it‑yourselfer, always eager to help his children or grandchildren repair something or build the latest toy. He was a military history buff and an aviation enthusiast.
John loved to travel, with many overseas trips and cruises taken with Elspeth in his retirement years. He was the go‑to trip planner for family and friends.
He treasured his time with Elspeth at the cottage in McKellar, Ontario — always working on its upkeep for the enjoyment of his family. In downtime, he enjoyed a boat ride to the ice cream store, a beer on the dock, and watching his grandchildren play.
Cremation has taken place and details regarding a celebration of his life are forthcoming.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to dementia research and support through the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
